Many individuals are using oregano oil as a veterinary medicine for their pets. But is it safe for dogs? To get the answer you should know about its benefits and side effects of oregano oil.
Benefits Of Oregano Oil
The presence of two powerful chemical compounds(Phenols) in the oregano oil provides dogs with the ability to fight against many harmful bacteria and microorganisms. Prescribed use of oregano oil reduces the chances of illness and enhances strength. Two major benefits of oregano oil for dogs are given below.
Beneficial For Infectious Skin
Oregano oil can be applied topically on infected areas of the skin to get faster relief. You can also apply the oregano oil on minor cuts and bruises but you must use diluted oregano oil. You can ask your veterinarian to add wild oregano oilin your dog’s antibiotics plan. The use of oregano oil also reduces the negative effects of medicines and antibiotics.
Effective For Ear Mites
One of the common problems every pet has to face is ear mites. They are stubborn and cause a lot of irritation to pets. Ear mites are usually found in the ear canal but they can also live on the skin. Therefore it is essential to get rid of ear mites and oregano oil is very helpful in this regard. Using 5 to 20 drops of diluted oregano oil in each ear will provide the best results.
Side Effects
One of the biggest disadvantages of oregano oil is it can kill the particularly stubborn methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The MRSA is very strong and it is resistant to many antibiotics. Hence it is mandatory to use it carefully according to the provided guidelines.
Also, there may be some allergic reaction to your dogs including swelling, itching, vomiting and diarrhoea. If you find any of the above signs consult your doctor immediately.
Directions For Usage
The oregano oil can be used both topically and internally for dogs.
To use internally you can add some diluted oregano oil in food or capsules. For oral dosage, add two or three drops of oregano oil in a teaspoon of carrier oil (coconut oil or any olive oil) and give it to your dog. Normally you must not exceed dosage by three times a day or you can consult a veterinarian for more details.
For topical usage, dilute the solution by one part of oregano oil to four parts of fatty carrier oil. For direct usage, apply one drop to the affected area or use a toothpick for application. To treat ear mites you need more concentrated oil. You can prepare that by adding 15 drops of oregano oil to 1 ounce of carrier oil. Make sure you don’t apply oregano essential oil anywhere before consulting properly.
Cautions
- Always use diluted oregano oil for dosage and topical usage.
- Don’t buy a low-grade oregano oil mixture from the market. It will be better if you prepare the solution at home according to guidelines.
